John Walker (ex Warrnambool) claims QLD singles crown

Less than a year after leaving his native Victoria for the sunnier climes of Hervey Bay, Pialba’s John Walker has made his mark on Queensland bowls.

The 60-year-old joined one of the state’s most exclusive clubs when he was crowned 2007 men’s singles Champion of Champions at Bribie Island Bowls Club yesterday.

Walker, who knocked out Queensland rep Andrew Paskins on his way to the final, defeated Hamilton’s Richard Strawbridge for the title.

The Pialba bowler looked cool and collected as he made a remarkable comeback from 11-4 seven shots down to take the match, 25-17.
“Richard got off to a very good start right from the word go, so it was just a matter of hanging in there.

“He’s a very good player, very methodical in how he plays and I just thought if I kept hanging in there and stuck to my drawing game that would get me through.

“Thankfully it paid off,” he said. Walker dedicated his win to Lloyd Toogood his mentor from his early days of bowling in Warrnambool
